Air pollution survey
You don't need to register, but if you enjoy taking part why not register later and take part in more consultations.
We have been checking the quality of the air we breathe against standards set by Government. Out of 8 pollutants identified
by Government as of concern, 2 have the potential to cause problems in our borough. These are nitrogen dioxide and very small
particles mainly associated with traffic. Air pollution levels are usually highest in the centre of London and lessen as you
move outside, but as Barking and Dagenham has some of the busiest roads in London higher levels of pollution occur.
The important question is not “how high are the levels?” but “who might be affected” If you only work here you may not be
be affected, but if you live close to the A12 and A13 you might be exposed for long periods. Poor air quality has an impact
on health, especially those with respiratory or heart conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and angina.
If there is a chance that people could be affected by the higher levels of pollution, the law requires the council to declare so-called “Air Quality Management Areas”.
Our view
As results show that air quality in parts of Barking and Dagenham is expected to fall below standards set by government, we have decided the whole borough be declared an Air Quality Management Area for Nitrogen Dioxide. We will then draw up an action plan of how pollution levels can be improved.
The event is not currently available for consultation.
